Most people associate BCAM with breast cancer, but it also stands for Blood Cancer Awareness Month. And it just started. Here’s some of the foundational information you need to know about blood cancer, so that you can have a better understanding of the different variances of the disease.
There are three types of blood cancer: Leukemia, Lymphoma, & Myeloma. The kicker is that blood cancer is not just cancer of the blood, but also cancer of the blood-forming organs. Pics to help explain:
Leukemia: A cancer of blood-forming tissues, hindering the body’s ability to fight infection.
Famous victims: Etta James, Nora Ephron, Charles Bukowski.
Lymphoma: A cancer of the lymphatic system.
Famous victims: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Charles Lindbergh, Joey Ramone.
Myeloma: A cancer of plasma cells.
Famous victims: Tom Brokaw, John Waters’ Dad, Peter Boyle.
Throughout September, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is holding events around the world and on the Internet in order to promote awareness and fundraise for different cures. The following are initiatives they’ve spearheaded to help you participate:
