Pink Drinks For Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and there’s no better way to help raise awareness then to pink-ify your life. Pink jackets, pink sneakers, pink ribbons… and now, pink drinks. I’ve put together my three favorite “pink drink” recipes for you to make next time your girls are over. Raise a glass to each other and to the cure.

The cosmopolitan, or the ‘cosmo,’ gained popularity during the 1990’s thanks to Carrie Bradshaw and Sex and the City. The combination of vodka, orange liqueur, lime juice, and cranberry juice makes it a timeless classic, and perfect for early Autumn nights.

1 1/2 oz vodka

1/4 oz lime juice (freshly squeezed is preferable)

1/4 oz triple sec

1 cup ice

1 lime wedge for garnish

Combine vodka, lime juice, triple sec, and cranberry juice in a cocktail shaker. Add ice, cover and shake until the shaker is frosty. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with lime wedge. Enjoy immediately.

One of the world’s most indispensable cocktails, the Negroni haa a culture all of its own. Here in San Francisco, we celebrate this cocktail (and only this cocktail) with Negroni week. The key ingredient, Campari is a classic Italian beverage that screams summer. It is hard to drink it without thinking of light-weight suits with narrow lapels, Ray-Ban Wayfarers, or Vespas. La dolce vita indeed. When Campari is combined with sweet vermouth and gin it creates a wonderfully balanced cocktail that is almost impossible to screw up.

1 1/2 oz gin (London Dry Gin)

3/4 oz Campari

3/4 oz Sweet Vermouth (preferably Italian Vermouth Rosso)

1 cup ice

1 orange peel to garnish

Combine gin, campari, sweet vermouth in a cocktail shaker. Add ice, cover and shake until the shaker is frosty. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with orange peel. Enjoy immediately.

(makes 1 serving)

A caveat: Campari is incredibly sweet on the front palate. The finish is very bitter. So if you are not quite prepared for the taste, it can seem like a bad joke. Trust me, this is an excellent cocktail and incredibly worth it.

Pomegranate Spritzer

Breaking open a pomegranate is like opening a diamond vault full of bright shiny red jewels. I love combining their tart juice with Cava to create a refreshing and distinctly Fall drink. Anyone who knows me, knows that, while I generally don’t drink Cava, its sweet flavor profile balances too perfectly with pomegranate juice to give up.

1 oz pomegranate juice

1-2 tsp sugar  to taste (additional is needed if you want to rim the glasses)

6 oz Cava

Add pomegranate juice and sugar to a large glass. Stir vigorously until most of the sugar has dissolved. Pour into chilled champagne flute that is rimmed with sugar. Top with Cava. Enjoy immediately.

(makes 1 serving)
